Type 1 Diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease, in which immune cells (T-lymphocytes) mount an attack to the cells of the pancreas that produce insulin (beta cells), resulting in its destruction. As so, these patients have to rely on insulin replacement therapy to live. Although this disease has a genetic predisposition, as it happens with other auto-immune diseases, the interaction between one’s genotype and several environmental factors play a major role. In the last 20 years, several dietary factors have been implicated in T1D, such as cow’s milk consumption, vitamin D insufficiency and exposure to gluten (a group of proteins in a number of cereals, especially wheat, rye and barley) in early life.

  1. I am glad you posted about this. I’m a vegan and 26 years old and still sufefr from acne. I eat healthy but I still eat sugar and lots of breads so my acne flares up especially around that time of the month.Giving up sugar and white flour is going to be pretty hard, especially since I’m addicted to chocolate!

      It can certainly be tough to go gluten, sugar, and dairy free, but it’s worth it considering your body’s inflammatory response will subside over time while following an ancestral-oriented diet plan. The mental and physical changes you may experience will certainly be worth it in the long run. If you are having trouble avoiding chocolate, consider consuming extra dark chocolate (80%) or higher in moderation to satisfy your cravings. You should be careful with consuming extra dark chocolate though, because there are still small quantities of sugar found in most dark chocolates. Good luck!
